Our unique individually created 1 to 1 or small private group photography tours offer you the chance to improve your photography dramatically and get a deep insight into Cambodia, it’s culture and people. Teaching you to become better photographers is important to us, so is giving you the chance to fully explore this fascinating country.
You will see and experience the lifestyle of the people first hand, plus be taught a tailor made photography course, designed to suit your current level and the sort of photography you wish to pursue. Your tutor will be Jonathan Taylor, his 25 years in the region means he has great insight into the region and wants to share it with you.
Your tour begins in Phnom Pehn and ends in Siem Reap but transport back to Phnom Pehn can be arranged if needed. Each day begins with a photography workshop, setting you up nicely for the day’s photography ahead. Each evening there will be a critique session and Photoshop and Lightroom are taught. You will be taught how to self edit and produce sets of images that have narrative and impact.
Day 01 In the morning we visit The River Quarter and see the old colonial buildings the capital is famous for. Later we cross the river to a small village on the far banks of The Mekong to visit a village inhabited by Vietnamese migrants. Very friendly and open people, a great way to start learning and improving your People Photography skills. Your first critique session will be at Riverside and in the lovely Foreign Correspondents Restaurant, over looking the Mekong.
Day 02 We will visit The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, you will again cross over the beautiful Mekong River to visit the rice farming communities on Silk Island. You get a chance to visit local households who produce beautiful silk products, all hand made. Silk Island is just a quick boat ride from the capital but it is like stepping back in time, great for photography and chance experience Cambodia’s more rural life.
Day 03 Siem Reap: Early in the morning we take a limousine ride to Siem Reap, arriving early afternoon you still have time to photograph around The Old Market and the life of the locals along the lovely Siem Reap River.
Day 04 Today you get to visit the stunning Angkor Wat Temple complex. You will be guided around this ancient wonder, shown the best traditional places for great landscape photography but also encouraged to seek your own unique imagery too. You will be shown all the major temples plus many of the lesser known ones too. Angkor also has a vibrant community of locals living there, monks and devotees, you will be taken of the beaten track to visit their homes too. Making this photography day a great mix of landscape and people photography, in one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring places imaginable.
Day 05 In the morning you will visit the extremely vibrant Sar Lur Market, this is the biggest Wet Market ( fresh meat and vegetable market ) in Cambodia. The locals buy and sell a wide range of goods, from sea food, meat, live snakes and vegetables. Your Feature and Portrait Photography can be improved upon, as the people are very open and friendly towards you photographing them. After the market you will be shown the rambled local streets with all the bustling life Southeast Asia has to offer. As the tour is private and the group very small students often find themselves invited into people’s homes for photography and a chance to experience different lifestyles.
Day 06 You will be driven by limousine to the amazing stilted fishing village of Kampong Phluk, this involves hiring a small boat to get to the village set deep out on a huge lake. There the local children come out to meet you whilst riding in steel washing basins, pigs are seen driven to market by boat, fisherman take care of their nets and boats below their homes. You will again be invited into people’s homes for photography. Your hired boat then takes you to the massive Tonle Sap Lake, where you can see and photograph the local fisherman bring in their nets and stow away the day’s catch.
Day 07 We take the four hour Limousine drive Cambodia’s second largest city, Battambang. Upon arriving you will be taken around the town and get the chance to really explore. During which an unique photography assignment will again be assigned to you, so you get a chance to improve your photography and discover the delights of the city.
Day 08 Battambang is famous for it’s quirky Bamboo Railway Line, or Norri as the locals call it. It was made just after the war to help locals travel from their remote villages to market or the children to school. It passes through beautiful rice paddies and villages, stoping periodically to let people off. If not slightly unusual, it is great for photography. You stop along the way and have the chance to photograph a small village and rice mill. In the evening you get to photograph another unique event at a bat cave. Each evening millions of bats leave the cave en masse, giving a spectacular display as they weave in spirals and head out to catch food.
Day 09 We set off in the Limousine to really explore the countryside and local communities that live there. Stopping when we see interesting activities on the way. We then head back to Siem Reap for photography critique session.
Day 10 Today we take the opportunity to catch up on any gaps your photography course may have left. A final fuller edit, of your work, is made and you can even re-shoot at some locations, such as a re-visit to Angkor, the market or local communities, to full in the gaps and produce a strong body of photographs to take home with you. This photography tour and course is designed to make you a better photographer too, helping you easily advance to the next level.
